Curse of the Dead Gods is a roguelike and a dungeon crawler played from an isometric perspective. In the game, the player assumes control of an explorer who must navigate three different dungeons in search for money, power and eternal life. The dungeons are procedurally generated, and each of them are filled with deadly traps, hazards and hostile enemies. As the player progresses, they collect new weapons and unlock new upgrades. They also slowly earn Crystal Skulls and Jade Rings, which can be used to purchase permanent upgrades. These upgrades are automatically unlocked during subsequent runs and trials. The game features 10 different weapon classes. Different weapons have different attributes, and weapon effects can be combined. Players also need to manage their stamina during combat.[1]


In addition to having a life meter, the game features a curse meter. The Curse meter increases as the player ventures into a new room, purchases items with a blood offering instead of gold, or fights enemies in the dark. Illuminating a room with braziers and torches can reduce darkness damage. Curses hinder the player's abilities and present additional challenges and opportunities. They will be lifted as a reward for beating the in-game bosses.[2]


The game received generally positive reviews upon release according to review aggregator Metacritic.[8] Stuart Gipp from Nintendo Life praised the game's combat system and compared it to Hades. He expressed his disappointment regarding the lack of a narrative focus, though he praised its "focused, crunchy gameplay" and rewarding exploration. He concluded his review by saying that Curse of the Dead Gods is a "breezier, simpler game than its clear inspirations".[12] Mitchell Saltzman from IGN called the game a "standout roguelite", and praised the combat system, the accessibility, and the enemy variety. He singled out the curse system, which added a strategic layer to the game's combat and made the game more unpredictable.[1] Liana Ruppert from Game Informer generally enjoyed the combat, but felt that the gameplay became stale after several trials and runs.[2]


You are Caradog McCallister, a character thrust into a living nightmare plagued with curses, death, and an endless array of traps meant to torture and maim. Be prepared to die a lot, though persistent progression takes the sting out of your demise. As you fight to survive, you find a plethora of weapons and gear to unlock and rank up, including both primary and secondary weapons, as well as ranged and two-handed. You can also combo different weapon types as well, which makes wading into a dark dungeon filled with terrors a little easier to face head-on.


To unlock each weapon, you travel certain paths that indicate the reward waiting for you at the end, so you can plan your own progression to a degree. You also accrue green rings and blue skulls through each run, which are used to unlock new weapons and add new buffs. Leveling up preferred weapons is also pretty straightforward, both with approaching paths with upgrade options available as well as paying tribute to the gods through blood, purity, or gold. This mechanical structure was something that I loved because it made it easier to strategize how I wanted to approach upgrades and what I was willing to give up for better stats.


Moreover, we have added the iconic Cursed Chest from Dead Cells, with a few alterations. When you encounter it during your runs, you will have to defeat a certain number of enemies without taking damage to unlock its tempting contents: a choice of 3 items (weapons or relics), one of which will always be cursed.


In Curse of the Dead Gods, you explore randomly generated maps in a cursed dungeon. Light is your best friend, as you take more damage in the dark and traps are only revealed when illuminated. With a trusty torch, you can set braziers (and enemies) alight in each dangerous room. A variety of primary, secondary, and two-handed weapons will keep each run fresh; not only do they all handle differently, they can have all sorts of additional effects.


This is a challenging game. Despite enemies telegraphing attacks, their numbers can get the better of you. Combined with arena traps, hazards, and a lack of light sources, it can be rather difficult. However, with a parry, dodge roll, and your set of weapons, you're given plenty of opportunity to defend yourself. Combat really keeps you on your toes, and gives the game a quick pace that makes runs that much more addictive. If you want a dungeon crawler with satisfying gameplay and some unique ideas, this is far from a curse.


The Early Access release of Curse of the Dead Gods includes the "Jaguar section," the first of three planned segments of the dungeon, each dedicated to a different god. Developer Passtech Games said that the game as it stands "is a fully-featured roguelite with a challenging curve, tight combat, and dozens of weapons, relics, curses, rooms, traps, and much more to discover." All the core systems in place, but everything is still in a beta (or in some cases, earlier) state.


It's pretty easy to look at Curse of the Dead Gods and dismiss it as riding the coattails of Hades. There are definitely a lot of similarities between the two, but Curse of the Dead Gods eschews much of the storytelling elements that make Hades stand out to deliver a more traditional, but never inferior, action roguelike experience.If you've been in search of an action game that will punish you for getting cocky and reward your patience and practice, Curse of the Dead Gods is a temple of doom full of deadly treasures.


Curse of the Dead Gods casts you in the shoes of a daring explorer who seemingly gets locked in an ancient, ever-shifting temple. On top of that, you've been inflicted with a horrible curse that builds as you progress further and further through it.


Those titular curses are a big part of things. As you pass through doors or battle certain enemies, your Corruption meter builds. When it hits critical mass, you'll be inflicted with a game-altering curse. Some of these are generally harmless, and some can even be beneficial to certain playstyles.


As runs get longer and enemies get tougher, however, these curses can build up on one another, leading to unintended combinations that can be impossible to overcome. If you hit your fifth curse on a single run, it's practically a death sentence, though defeating a boss does let you knock a curse off.


You play as a man who finds himself exploring a dark temple, only to become cursed and unable to escape. Now he must fight his way through and ultimately confront the gods sleeping within the temple itself. It captures the atmosphere of a Tomb Raider or Indiana Jones-esque exploration, in Aztec-themed temples that are filled with traps.


Truly a one of a kind game and an early dark horse contender for game of the year, Curse of the Dead Gods is one of the most exciting roguelites in years. If you love games that kick your ass over and over until you master them thoroughly, Curse of the Dead Gods ought to be your next purchase. You can thank (and curse) us later.


Curse of the Dead Gods embraces the best parts of the roguelike and delivers a fantastic gameplay experience. The core gameplay loop is the temple run. The temple is a cursed place, but each run feels like anything but a curse. My runs typically lasted under 20 minutes, because a lot of them ended before the final boss anyway. So the game can be played in well-paced chunks of progression. And progression was on hand, because even those failures meted out a reward. Roguelike purists might scoff at the notion, but I found this mechanic only to be to the game's credit.


As for the runs themselves, the premise is simple: enter the cursed temple and battle and dodge your way to the boss. Each run is a series of rooms, each room randomly generated. So even if the end boss is the same, the path you take to get there is always different. You map your run based on each room's reward: a new weapon or upgrade, new blessing or item, a treasure room for gold, a health station to recharge. You can follow branching trees based on what you need in each run, no predefined paths.


Runs also gain a variety between the many gods you must face. At the start you have three paths to three bosses, each environment unique with its own traps, enemies, barriers, and boss. While the maps themselves are generated randomly, they are done well, always feeling unique enough even with the familiar objects that comprise them. In the end, though, a run can be doomed before it starts with some unlucky RNG. But having a good load out and more options to reroll for better chances at gear are key to getting over the crux of the level's boss. It all harkens right back to benefits of allowing some small measure of progress to carry over with the upgrades and unlocks. Even when RNG was against you and you couldn't chance upon a good load out, you will earn something for your troubles, but more importantly what you earn will improve your chance of not running into that rotten luck in the future. 041b061a72
